Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from her aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the space she required during the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in small production studios right after she graduated from school. The year 1999 was the time she established her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
